AN exhibit showcasing the best of Essex artists will take place in Maldon.

The exhibit A Bygone Era will be open from October 20 to November 17 at Hayletts Gallery in High Street.

A spokesman said: “Contrary to popular belief, Essex has a wealth of talented artists both currently and historically.

“We decided to shine a light on Essex’s brilliant heritage and put together an exhibition of the great and the good of artists who are sadly no longer with us.

“A good selection lived and worked in Great Bardfield in the 1950’s.

“Others were active members of the Colchester Art Society or attended The Royal College of Art as a student or tutor.

“Being a local art gallery, over the years we have exhibited many of the artists involved and are privileged to have met and come to know their families.

“This has enabled us the luxury of obtaining many of the artworks directly from their estates.

“For regular visitors, this will be akin to visiting old friends.

“From War Artists to pioneers of Pop Art, innovators in printmaking and new ways of seeing photography, enjoy this broad selection of oils, acrylics, watercolours, drawings, mixed media, photographs, linocuts, etchings, engravings and woodcuts.”

Artists in this exhibition include: Edward Ardizzone, Anthony Atkinson, Ted Atkinson, Duffy Ayers, Roderic Barrett, Edward Bawden, Bernard Cheese, Peter Coker, Henry Collins, Walter Hoyle, Edward Hughes, John Nash, Eduardo Paolozzi, John O’Connor, Joyce Pallot, Sheila Robinson, Michael Rothenstein, Ron Sims, Humphrey Spender, Catharni Stern, Stephanie Stow and Valerie Thornton.

All works featured will be for sale.

The gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am - 5pm.
