THE bunting is up and the red carpet rolled out to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Basildon Sporting Village today.

Prince William and the former Kate Middleton, also known as “Wills and Kate” will be meeting multiple apprentices from Coach Core Essex, and representatives from South Essex Gymnastics Club and Sport for Confidence.

The Duke and Duchess will also be hearing from coaching graduates, and learn how the scheme in Essex is linking the community with sport.

Coach Core Essex has been running for almost three years, showing growth and building strong partnerships with organisations year after year.

Their Royal Highnesses will meet apprentices working with two of these partner organisations; Sport for Confidence and South Essex Gymnastics club, who have been involved with Coach Core Essex since its inception and have subsequently employed multiple apprentices as coaches.

They will meet the newest batch of Coach Core apprentices, as well as some of the 30 plus graduates of the programme, before joining in with their coaching sessions, including tennis and indoor athletics.

Their Royal Highnesses will also take part in a game of Boccia, which is one of the sports provided by Sport for Confidence, a social enterprise that provides sporting opportunities to individuals who face barriers to participation.

Boccia is a precision ball sport played by people who use a wheelchair, having been originally created for those who live with cerebral palsy.

It is played at local, national and international levels.

Their Royal Highnesses will then walk through to the gymnastics centre, which is the home of South Essex Gymnastics Club. The Duke and Duchess will be able to watch Olympic standard gymnasts in training as well as a pre-school session run by Coach Core apprentices and graduates.

Established by The Royal Foundation in 2012, Coach Core aims to harness the power of sport, and its ability to change lives and empower young people.

Driven by a desire to build upon the legacy of the Olympic Games, Coach Core was created by The Royal Foundation to inspire young people who are not in education or employment through sport, and create the next generation of sports coaches who will themselves go on to inspire their communities for many more generations to come.

Sport for Confidence has five sites across Essex, including its Basildon centre, and oversee approximately 250 people per week in 30 different activities.

The South Essex Gymnastics Club was formed with the amalgamation of Basildon, Castle Point and Magna Carta Gymnastics Clubs and had their original premises built in 1992.
