A GRANDMOTHER who tripped on a broken pavement by an infant school was left with two black eyes.

70-year-old Casie Allan was collecting her granddaughter from Greenstead Infants school, Basildon when she fell.

The first thing she noticed was her bleeding hands but the shock numbed the initial pain.

She said: “I didn’t see the crack but I fell pretty hard.

“We went into the school and they let me sit down and gave me some treatment, then the bruising came out. It really is bad, I couldn’t believe how my face looked.”

And the frustrated grandmother insisted something needs to be done before other pedestrians are injured - with hundreds of people using the path every day

Casie added: “Hundreds of people walk along that path every day, and it is a hazard.

“It is definitely is not the only pothole or crack along there, I am surprised it hasn’t happened to anyone else yet. There are always a lot of grandparents like me collecting their grandchildren and they need to be careful.”

Casie admitted she was able to laugh, despite the pain, after she was told by another council residents are not allowed doormats at her sheltered accommodation on Cromer Avenue, Basildon, because they are a “trip hazard”.

She said: “It really is the definition of ironic, and you almost have to laugh.”

She now hopes councils will take care of their own trip hazards.

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “We are sorry to learn of this lady’s injuries. “Following the report, an inspector will visit the site to check the pavement.

“We will then carry out repairs.”
