A KIND-hearted fundraiser who began raising money after being diagnosed with a brain tumour has died.

Stuart Brewer, 53, from Westcliff, was diagnosed with a grade four Glioblastoma tumour in September last year after suffering a stroke while on holiday in Portugal.

His reaction was to help raise thousands of pounds for others.

His family, keeping up his example, gave back to the ward that cared for him with a donation of more than £700 in his memory.

The money will go to the Elizabeth Loury ward to pay for a new wheelchair.

During the last year Stuart helped raised funds for Southend Hospital and cancer charities in various ways.

He organised a “brave the shave” charity head shave day at his local pub, The Melrose, in Westcliff, raising £1,500.

And he persuaded a friend to abseil down Southend Hospital, which raised more than £1,000.

Stuart’s sisters, Sally Adkins, 56, and Hazel Harris, 48, said: “He had such a good sense of humour. Even after he was told he had a brain tumour and was talked through everything, he said ‘right then, let’s go for a cup of tea shall we’, he just took everything in his stride.

Stuart spent time in and out of Southend Hospital after undergoing brain surgery at Queens Hospital, in Romford, but unfortunately surgeons were unable to remove the whole tumour and Stuart went on to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy

Sadly, Stuart lost his battle against brain cancer in August this year.

The final donation has just been made to the hospital.

The well-loved man has been describe by many as a loving and caring son, brother, dad and grandad including to his 30-year-old son, Shane, and 11-year-old and three-year-old grandchildren.

A spokesman for Southend Hospital Charity, said: “We are very grateful to the family and friends of Stuart Brewer who raised nearly £800 for the Elizabeth Loury Ward at Southend Hospital in his memory. The money is going to be put towards a new wheelchair for the ward.”
