Hither Green residents will be able to quench their thirst for beer and conversation after a new micro-pub was granted planning permission on Springbank Road.

Lewisham councillors voted unanimously in favour of the application, which will see Mathbrew micro-pub sell “quality beer and real ale” with the intention of making a “community pub” for locals to gather, according to planning documents.

Local residents voiced their support of the application, with hopes the pub will encourage regeneration of the area.

Addressing the planning committee, resident Jenny Martin said: “It’s a place for community members like me to gather and play some board games and drink some craft beers and go home by 10 o’clock.

“It will improve the street and encourage businesses to join the parade, but most importantly it will prevent further erosion of the character of our street.”

Fellow supporter Paddy Duffy said there were no facilities for locals to socialise.

“Families in the area are desperate for a facility, we need somewhere to go,” he said.

“The parade needs some regeneration and that is the first step in that. it will feed into more local economy. we are very in support of it.”

But the application received 19 objections – with a petition against the development gathering 29 signatures.

Potential noise, disturbance and smoking patrons were a concern for neighbours.

An objector who lives in a nearby flat said: “The fact is they will sit there or go outside and they will smoke above our living room.

“Having our window open makes smoke come straight in.

“We find it very hard to think that with a busy pub, which if it gets approved I hope it will be busy, that people in the room wont’ make noise that we won’t be able to hear.

“If people are in there, playing Monopoly and board games in there; you know how Monopoly gets, it’s ferocious,” he joked.

A fellow objector said patrons in the bar’s snug would be able to see onto the terrace where his children play.

“At the end of the day this is a proposal for a late-night establishment surrounded by residential properties.

“I moved to the area to start a family,” he told the committee.

Cllr Silvana Kelleher commented that the pub could bring some “much needed life” back into the area.

“I know economically Springbank road suffered terribly in the 80s and hasn’t recovered since,” she said.

The pub will close by 10pm from Sunday to Thursday, and 11pm on Friday and Saturday.
