THE new owners of a popular riverside pub in Maldon are appealing for help to uncover the iconic building's history.

Maldon's Sunny Sailor, in Fullbridge, was taken over last month by owner Sally Wilsdon, however the building has been a prominent sight on the banks of the River Chelmer since the 1600s.

Experienced publican John Adds is the new landlord and Liam Cockett will run the business on a day-to-day basis.

Although the team is already putting big plans in place for the business' future, they are also keen to find out more about its past and want anyone with information to come forward.

Chris Adds, who will run the promotional side of the business, said: "We know bits and bobs about the past and there is a scattering of information we've been able to find.

"We know it has been passed around a lot over the years.

"We think the building was built in the 1600s and we want to know what it has been in the past as it can't have been a pub all that time.

"We know it must have an interesting history but we cannot find out much information about it."

Refurbishment works are under way at the premises in the hopes of creating a relaxing atmosphere for customers.

Food is already being served at lunch times and plans are being put in place to bring in an evening menu in the near future.

Mr Adds said: "We are doing some refurbishments to the outside area of the pub to make it more people friendly.

"Inside we will be refurbishing the middle floor which is a bit derelict at the moment.

"We are hoping to shape it into more of an events and music premises.

"We have had a very busy couple of weekends so far.

"There is a bit more of a relaxed vibe from before and there have been a number of returning customers since we took over.

"John worked here for the previous manager for around four years so he knows the place very well."
