A POIGNANT plaque pays tribute to the young men from Govanhill who died in World War I.

And now, community workers are seeking help to find the families of any of the heroes who are listed.

Govanhill Housing Association is on the lookout for descendants of veterans named on a memorial that sits in one of its properties.

Committee Member John McLardie said: "As an Association we are fortunate to own a number of buildings with a rich history, which we always try to preserve where possible.

"Although we were aware of the presence of the memorial, we have very little idea about the lives of the men named, who their families were or where they eventually ended up."

The plaque is behind the reception desk of the Govanhill Community Development Trust (GCDT) workspace at 69 Dixon Road.

The B-listed building was formerly the New Bridgegate Church.

The memorial features the names of more than 100 men who served in the Great War who were members of the parish at the time.

GCDT acquired the former church building in 1992 and it was then converted into a unique office space serving a variety of businesses and organisations.

Mr McLardie added: "This is particularly meaningful for me, as I lost two Great Uncles in World War I.

"The history of ordinary people affected by war is all too easily forgotten, and we are keen for anyone who thinks they might have a connection to anyone listed to get in touch."
