SOUTHEND United boss Chris Powell has called on his side to improve their disciplinary record.

Blues have already been shown four red cards this season, the joint highest in the whole of League One.

But Powell is keen for his players to keep their cool in a bid to protect an already depleted squad.

“Last year I didn’t have any red cards in 18 games, this year I’ve had four and that’s something we have to improve,” said the Blues boss.

“I want the players to have an edge and care but we could do without these suspensions because our squad is decimated as it is.

“To lose someone like Michael (Turner) for three games is disappointing because you want everyone available.”

Blues had goalkeeper Mark Oxley and winger Michael Kightly sent off for violent conduct against Charlton Athletic back in September, while Simon Cox was dismissed during the 2-1 defeat to Coventry City in October after being shown two yellow cards in quick succession.

Experienced centre-back Michael Turner was also red carded towards the end of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Blackpool and will now miss the next three matches.

Boss Powell was also red carded against Plymouth in August after a touchline fracas with Pilgrims chief Derek Adams during the 1-1 draw at Home Park.
