FAMILIES lined the streets of Leigh for the launch of the festive period.

Leigh Town Council held the Leigh Lights event and the town was lit up to the delight of huge crowds who joined in with the celebrations.

There was plenty of entertainment and fun followed by a parade through the town centre.

There were also stalls selling cakes, balloons, books, Christmas gifts and providing face painting.

The town centre was bustling, with extra entertainers this year including Violet Streak’s Circus stilt walkers, HappyHearts giant bubbles and snow machines.

The Yuletide Parade kicked off from 6.30pm from Leigh Road and 19 different groups and organisations took part to raise money for their chosen charities.

Visitors to the event could also vote for their favourite parade entry.

Once the votes have been counted up the winners will receive £150 for their chosen charity courtesy of Stibbards and Sons funeral directors.

There were even some special guests at the festive event in the town including mayor of Southend Derek Jarvis and David Amess MP for Southend West.

Town clerk Helen Symmons said: “The whole parade route was lined with happy smiling faces.”

Carole Mulroney, Leigh town councillor said: “During the Leigh Lights, Leigh truly was the happiest place in the UK.”
