TO mark 2019 almost being upon us, we’ve looked out some nostalgic photos which show how Southend folk were celebrating New Year’s Eve back in the Twenties.

The images show New Year’s Eve dances taking place as the year 1924 descended into 1925 across Southend.

The hottest ticket in town was a New Year’s Eve ball at the Kursaal where high flying celebrations were literally on the bill.

As the clock struck midnight and 1925 was declared, a miniature aeroplane flew down from the Kursaal roof. The 1,400 guests in the ballroom cheered and clapped as the ‘plane’ landed on the stage before the entire room erupted into songs including ‘’Auld Land Syne’, ‘Land of Hope and Glory and ‘the bells were ringing the Old Year out’.

Other NYE dances held across Southend in this year can also be seen in our picture gallery.
