A woman remains in hospital following a shooting incident in Southend.

A man who also suffered gunshot wounds has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Emergency services were called to an address in Sutton Road shortly after 7.20pm yesterday, Sunday, January 13.

A 40-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were found with facial injuries and are believed to have been shot.

The woman remains in hospital in a critical condition.

The man, who was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident, has since been discharged from hospital and remains in custody for questioning.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "A man was arrested on suspicion of murder due to the serious nature of the woman’s injuries and her critical condition.

"Officers and ambulance staff that attended the incident found her unresponsive and gave immediate CPR."

They are known to each other and at this stage Essex Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.
