SOUTHEND United’s under-15s continued their fine form in the EFL Floodlit Cup with a 3-2 win at Millwall.

Mohammed Amir bagged a brace while Louie Rodmell was also on target as Blues won their third group game in succession.

And coach Danny Heath was delighted with the display as the Shrimpers fought hard to come out on top.

“Millwall had the better of the play in the early stages but the lads still showed commitment and determination to eventually work their way back into the game and created good chances in the latter part of the first half,” said Heath.

“Our three goals, all of which were in the second half, were through good play which was really pleasing by the team.

“It showed their ability to work the ball up the pitch and through the thirds to create and take the opportunities.

“Millwall scored their second goal with five minutes remaining but the lads remained composed and focused on what they needed to do to win the game.

“It was a pleasing night as the team, first and foremost, performed well and showed how to manage the game to win, which is also a part of their development.”

The victory maintained Southend’s 100 per cent record in the group.

Blues had previously seen off Portsmouth and Watford in the competition and have two group games remaining.

The first of those will take place at Stevenage at the end of the month before they finish off by hosting Barnet.

And Heath is keen to maintain the good run.

“One more win will see us qualify for the national quarter-finals of the EFL Floodlit Cup, which would be great,” said Heath.

“We’ve had such really good performances in the competition but we want to make sure we have more.”

The Shrimpers’ clash with Barnet will be played at Great Wakering Rovers’ Burroughs Park base on Wednesday February 13, kicking off at 7.45pm.

And Heath would love to see a number of Blues fans in attendance.

“It will be free to get in so we’re keen to spread the word and get a few people there watching,” said Heath.

“I’m sure it will be a good game.”
