SOUTHEND United’s Simon Cox is revelling in his new strike partnership with Stephen Humphrys but believes the best is yet to come.

Humphrys scored twice to help Blues win 4-0 on his debut at Bradford City on Saturday.

But Cox also hit the back of the net and was delighted to link up with the former Fulham forward.

“It was nice to be next to a big striker like that who could take the bumps and bruises rather than me having to try and do battle with defenders over six foot tall,” said Cox.

“I thought Stephen did really well but the best thing is there will definitely still be more to come.

“He’s going to get fitter and stronger the more he plays and obviously the more games he has we will all get used to playing alongside him.

“It was a great start though and I would say that’s the best we’ve played all season.”

Blues’ victory saw them work their way up to 10th in the League One table.

And Cox felt the win was more impressive than the standings suggest.

“You can look at the table and think we’ll win that because Bradford are second from bottom but it doesn’t work like that,” said the striker, who has now scored 11 goals so far this season.

“Bradford have been doing well recently and the manager said to us before the game that it was going to be our attitude that won or lost us the game.

“But the attitude was spot on and with the goals, the clean sheet and a good debut from Sam Hart as well there were a lot of pleasing factors.”

The Shrimpers will now be looking to build on the win when they host high-flying Luton Town this weekend.

And Cox is determined to make it back-to-back wins.

“If we can’t go into a game full of confidence after a 4-0 win then we will never go into a game full of confidence,” said Cox.

“We want to close the gap between us and the top six and we weren’t at our best when we went to Luton at the start of the season so we want to do much better this time.

“We had a good following that night and we didn’t play well but we want to go and make it back-to-back wins now.”
