PLANS have been revealed for a new pub and hotel in Wickford.

Marston’s, pub chain is planning for a venue on land north of Radwinter Avenue.

The company is holding a public consultation until Friday February 15.

The business will hold an exhibition event today at Wickford Community Centre, running from from 3pm until 8pm.

No official planning application has been submitted to Basildon Council but proposals are expected to come forward from the chain very soon.

David Harrison, former mayor of Basildon called for major road improvements to be given the green light before any large development goes ahead.

He said: “I believe this would be good for Wickford but I am still concerned about the issue of access to the site.

“This is a busy and bad junction made worse by homes built very recently close by.

“I do think that something like this would be welcomed in the town.

“It may be that the whole junction could need to be reconsidered.”

Some residents have raised concerns about traffic increasing and noise issues if these plans are agreed.

Barbara Sumner said: “All the people that are in favour don’t live near it.

“We live right on top of it and the traffic is horrendous. Now this will make it worse.

“I am also very worried about all the noise and late night drinkers disturbing residents.

“I think we have enough pubs in Wickford already and don’t think it should be built so near to housing.”

Simon Cox added: “I am unsure about the plans. I think any new business is always good but we have to make sure there are no negative impacts on the community.

“I understand why people are worried about noise and even traffic.

“I think we need to be reassured these are not going to be a problem.

“I would encourage as many people to comment on the consultation.”

Residents can comment on the plans at

A Marston’s spokesman said: “We are holding a public consultation for a potential new pub and lodge for the Wickford area on Thursday January 31.

"We want the community to feel involved in the development as the local community is key to every success of the pub so, during the meeting we will be taking questions on the proposed plans. We look forward to seeing everyone there.”
