A PHOTOGRAPHER has recreated scenes from a historic flood on Canvey.

Jaydee Niall decided to stage the photoshoot about the 1953 flood on the island.

Echo:

She and her late parents are from Canvey and her mum was one of the residents who witnessed the flood which occurred in January of that year.

Echo:

She said: “My mum would tell the story to me as we were growing up about how her parents were taken out of their home on boats and how all their home was devastated.

Echo:

“The beautiful history in mural form painted on the Canvey seawall gave me the inspiration to do a themed photoshoot.

Echo:

"The children who were pictured are aged between five and ten-years-old and spent an autumn morning dressed up, with original 1950s props belonging to my mum.

Echo:

“The clothes I found in charity shops. I tried to captivate the flood in photo form without trying to make it look too joyous.”

Echo:

She added the children absolutely enjoyed themselves and she used a couple of dogs to complete the setting.

Echo:

Ms Niall is a hobby photographer and with her photography she tries to do themed photo shoots which capture certain styles.

A total of 59 lives were lost in the flood on Canvey and 23 of those who died were buried at Jotman’s Cemetery, Benfleet.
