A popular gin bar in Leigh will stay open after owners agreed to strict new conditions - including improving the quality of door staff.

Southend Council called for a review of the licensing terms at Mojo, which sits on the corner of Carlton Drive and Leigh Road, after hundreds of complaints were made by disgruntled neighbours.

The complaints ranged from noise to antisocial behaviour and disturbances, some saw police called.

Prior to the review, the council’s legal team met with the legal representatives from Mojo and were able to agree several conditions which should help tackle the problems.

Ward councillor Bernard Arscott, who acted as the official representative for the residents, said: “It was pretty successful - it’s not absolutely where residents wanted to be, but it’s better than it was.

“There was an acknowledgement the door staff had not been of the standard required and this was to blame for a lot of the problems.

“So the bar have agreed to hire contractors who the council are familiar with so that these standards can be better upheld.”

Mr Arscott went on to say there were a number of other conditions including door staff wearing body cams, only six people allowed in the smoking area at one time and only eight people queuing at one time.

He added: “Now these new conditions can be enforced as they are part of a formal agreement and it will be reviewed in six months on these grounds.

“This probation period will allow us to see how they will perform as the weather gets warmer and through several bank holidays.

“This is a great example of concerns being listened to and acted upon.”

Mark Flewitt, councillor responsible for public protection, said: “The licensing sub-committee reviewed the licence of Mojo and I can confirm a number of new conditions were added to the licence to assist with the issues raised by residents.

"I’m grateful to councillor Arscott and his fellow ward councillors in Leigh for bringing this matter to our attention some time ago.”
