A musical sensation from Essex will be coming to Maldon next week.

Maldon’s town mayor and the Rotary Club of Maldon jointly present an evening of music with the Sid Bolan Big Band at Maldon Town Hall in Market Hill.

The concert will take place next Saturday from 7.30pm.

The big band hails from Basildon and includes a normal line-up of five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass, guitar, drums and two vocalists performing a multitude of styles.

A band spokesman said: “Remember the bands of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie and Duke Ellington?

“Well, the Sid Bolan recreates those great bands.

“Our singers perform music from the great singers such as Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland and Ella Fitzgerald.

“The spread of music we play is wide and varied, from traditional big band music to swing, jazz, ballroom and Latin and modern dance music.

“The band also includes a selection of more modern music to cater for all occasions.”

Formed more than 30 years ago, the band’s name is an anagram of Basildon.

The show promises to be highly entertaining.

A town council spokesman said: “Judy Smith, chairman of the Maldon Rotary Club, suggested to the town mayor that they hold a joint event, to raise money for their respective charities.

“She had heard the Sid Bolan Big Band previously and can promise it will be a good evening’s musical entertainment.

“The Rotary Club of Maldon will donate their share of the profits from the evening to local charities, and the town mayor’s charities will also benefit.”

Tickets are £10 from the town council.
