A WOMAN was put in hospital with serious head injuries after a “horrid” crash on Canvey.

The woman was walking at the end of Beach Road near the Jet petrol station on Canvey High Street. She was hit by a car when trying to cross the road.

Neighbours near the scene heard the crash and rushed to the scene to tend to the woman.

An ambulance was called and the woman, believed to be in her 60s, was taken to hospital in Southend for further treatment.

She suffered serious head and hip injuries.

Police also attended and diverted traffic while paramedics treated the woman at the scene.

Canvey resident Molly Savage was one of the first people on scene to help the woman, who reportedly could not remember what happened.

Ms Savage said: “She didn’t know where she was, where she was going, what happened or the day of the week it was.

“It was horrid. I couldn’t stop thinking about her all night, I was second on the scene and felt really worried afterwards.

“From what I’ve been told she’s fractured her pelvis and spine and has got a clot on the brain.”

It is understood the driver of the car initially didn’t stop, but eventually returned to the scene.

Essex Police are appealing for dash cam and CCTV footage of the crash. No arrests have been made.

A police spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car in Beach Road, Canvey Island at around 6.55pm on Monday.

“The pedestrian, a woman, has been taken to hospital for treatment on serious head and hip injuries.

“Our enquiries are ongoing.”

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 6.52pm on Monday with reports of a collision in High Street, Canvey.
