COMMUTERS fear they will become completely cut off if bus services are axed from Canvey.

First Bus and Essex Police are appealing for the public to help educate young people of the consequences of violence and anti-social behaviour after the company was forced to divert routes due to multiple attacks.

Bary Peaches, of London Road, Benfleet, said: “I have many friends on Canvey, a lot of whom don’t drive. They said they’ll be completely cut off without any buses.

“Not everyone is able to have a car, public transport is vital. This can’t go on.”

The most recent incident was at the junction of the A13 and A132 in Pitsea on Thursday February 14 at 8.40pm.

Another bus was targeted in Canvey Road, Canvey, on February 9 at about 7pm.

There were three similar reports in Benfleet between January 5 and 11, and another in High Street, Shoebury, on January 28.

Insp Cathy Calder said: “I have taken the lead in working with First to investigate the damage incidents, identify the suspects and work on deterrent initiatives.

“I would echo the view that we really need the public to assist identify those involved, report incidents if they see them occurring, and educate our young people around the cost and consequences of anti-social behaviour and damage incidents.

“A number of the incidents make reference to groups of young people being in the area. We have pulled together a plan which we will discuss with First before sharing further.”

She added: “These mindless acts of vandalism have caused considerable damage to a number of buses, which not only has a significant impact on the bus company and the community, but also puts lives in danger.

“It is very fortunate that no-one was hurt when the windows of these vehicles were smashed.

“It’s not yet clear if the same people are responsible for all of these incidents, but we are continuing our enquiries and are keen to speak to any witnesses, particularly any drivers who have dash cam footage. Someone will know who is involved and we ask anyone who has any information to contact us.”
