A HUGE Leigh home, thought to be once owned by singer Dame Vera Lynn, could be converted into flats.

The plans for 135 Marine Parade include extending it, then converting it into seven new homes.

It is believed the property was once owned by Dame Vera Lynn, fondly known as “the Forces’ Sweetheart”.

The plans also include a new parking area and access from Thames Drive.

The application has been submitted by developer Paul Miller.

Councillors and estate agents claimed the famous war-time singer owned and stayed at the prominent property.

Peter Wexham, Liberal Democrat councillor for Leigh, said: “Yes, I have heard that Vera Lynn stayed at the home.

“I don’t know if this was just a short time or a long time.

“I have heard from others she stayed there.”

An online blog posted on April 3, 2017 by Rob Kahl from Scott and Stapleton Estate Agents, claims the home was owned by the singer.

The application was received by Southend Council on February 12 - and was validated last week.

It is expected the council will make a decision on the plans by April 17.

John Lamb, Tory leader of Southend Council raised some concerns about over development.

He said: “We need to be careful about what we allow here especially as it’s a very busy junction in the area.”

A design and access statement said: “The proposal forming this application is to fully remodel the decapitated building.

“The scheme was designed to utilise the traditional forms and key features of the home, but utilise a more contemporary palette to the front.

“The main materials to be used would be a synthetic render timber vertical feature cladding and composite tiles to create a contemporary vernacular.

“The scheme will fit into the existing street-scene due to the diverse architectural styles to Marine Parade.

“The proposal has been carefully designed and planned to reduce the impact on the site.”

Dame Vera Lynn became a hugely popular figure as a singer during the Second World War.

She toured Egypt and India giving outdoor concerts to boost troops morale.
