A CANVEY council tenant is being investigated for illegally renting out two homes.

Essex Police and Castle Point Council’s fraud team raided two homes after receiving information from the public.

The homes are in Link Road and Westerland Avenue, both on Canvey.

The council tennant is being investigated amid allegation she was making money fraudulently.

She is co-operating with both the police and fraud officers.

Evidence was seized from both properties and handed over to the fraud team to continue with the investigations.

Ian Risden, Essex Police neighbourhood constable for Castle Point and Rochford Community Policing Team, deemed the operation a success.

He said: “The woman is now assisting the fraud officers and the investigations.

“We have seized plenty of evidence which will be analysed with the fraud team, that works with a few council’s in south Essex.

“The work was initiated by the council.

“The operation saw some good work from our officers and the fraud team officers.”

Concerns were raised about the welfare of tenants living in poor conditions or being exploited.

However Essex Police have confirmed nobody was at risk or required safeguarding and the alleged landlord is fully cooperating with the fraud team.

The Castle Point and Rochford Community Policing Team provided details of the raid on its Facebook page.

Castle Point Council was approached by the Echo for comment but no response was received by the time of going to press.
