BASILDON has been rated as the worst place for Millennials to live in the UK.

In a recent study by credit experts, TotallyMoney, Basildon hit the bottom spot out of 63 places nationwide, with Glasgow bagging the top spot.

TotallyMoney looked at 16 elements which are considered to be important to Millennials, including work factors, such as overtime hours, paid overtime, average weekly earnings, number of business start-ups, graduate hires, employment rates, and the number of young people on benefits.

Property factors were also considered, including the cost of a one-bedroom property to rent as well as to buy, and lifestyle factors were also considered, including the number of things to do, the population aged 0 to 17 and 18 to 29, and the percentage of Brexit remain voters.

Findings showed only 2 per cent of graduates actually find work in the area and that Basildon fell behind the rest of the UK in the amount of extra-curricular activities that are on offer.

The town was given a lifestyle rank of 53 out of the 63 cities in the study, and was rated 47 out of the 63 for costs of living.

Employment rate, average one-bed asking prices and rents, and business start-ups per 10,000 population, were generally good, in comparison to the rest of the UK.

The findings have created quite a stir in the area, with Anthony McGarel, Deputy Principal and Chief Executive at South Essex College saying: “This is an interesting survey which obviously doesn’t paint the best picture of opportunities for Millennials in Basildon.

Creating graduate opportunities in Basildon is a challenge as it’s so well placed in terms of transport into London that the area will inevitably lose graduates to well-paid industry in the heart of the City.

“South Essex College is committed to improving opportunities in Basildon. We believe it has a lot to offer including local talent and is ideally placed within the Thames Gateway to provide fantastic opportunities for business and young people to stay in the area.

“This is why we’re working with Basildon Council to build a state of the art provision, right in the town centre.

"Digital technologies has been identified as a growth industry in the area and wider Thames Gateway and this will be the focus of what is offered for young people at this site.”
