VINYL fans braved a chilly night to queue up for Record Store Day today.
Shop owners said it was an excellent day as customers splashed out on the limited edition albums they love.
Rachel Lowe, co-owner of Vinyl Revolution in Duke Street, Brighton, said: "It was an absolutely amazing day and we were so busy.
“There was a long queue when I arrived at the shop on Saturday morning.
"One customer, Chris, bought 18 vinyl records and he had started queuing at about 5pm on Friday.
"When I came in to open the shop at about 5.30am he came in to help us blow up some balloons.
"Some customers said they started lining up before midnight. As soon as we opened the door everyone rushed in to defrost first before looking for their vinyl records.
"The first record we sold was a Mighty Boosh album. And it was Chris who bought it.
"The shops in Duke Street helped us in promoting Record Store Day."
Frank Taylor, owner of Cult Hero in Brighton Place, Brighton, said: “It was very busy day. The first record I sold was the Lost in Translation soundtrack.
"One customer spent £400 on vinyl records. There was a good mix of age groups which is very pleasing to see. People were still coming in during the afternoon which is fantastic."
Peter Atkinson, Labour Councillor for North Portslade said: “This is our fifth Record Store Day and my son Matthew and I arrived at Resident at 3.30am to try and make sure we got all we were after. I got a really rare Ska record, only 200 pressed, worldwide.
“It’s a great event, really friendly and we always have a chat with people. It’s also great to support an excellent shop like Resident.”
Cllr Atkinson, though early, wasn’t by any means the first. Paul Mitchell from Littlehampton, who has been collecting since he was a child, had been camping out with friends since 1.30am.
Catherine Jack, 52, from Hove was taking part in her first RSD. She said she was attending on behalf of her brother who lives in Dubai. He is “a real collector” and wants me to get something by Prince or Boy George.
Although Ms Jack downloads music for herself she says she can “really appreciate the quality of vinyl.”
