A description of a man who assaulted a election candidate while she was canvassing has been released.

Carla Hales, who stood as a Conservative candidate in the Colchester Council elections, was approached from behind while in Bourne Street.

A man verbally abused her and then punched her in the torso a number of times.

The incident happened at around 4pm on April 24.

Essex Police has now released a description of a man who is believed to have carried out the attack.

A spokesman said: "The man, described as being aged between 20 and 30, had dark hair and was potentially over 6ft.

"He is described by the victim as being of Asian or Mediterranean descent, and wore a black quilted jacket that reached his knees with dark-coloured skinny jeans and white trainers, as well as a black cap with a green trim.

"It is unknown in which direction the man left the scene, which was between Bourne Road and Brookside Close, but it is believed that he was on foot."
