This week Down Memory Lane goes to Stanford and Fobbing.

First we see Stanford Wharf Road, that was once the main route to the busy wharf by the river. The road was private and the gate was used to close it to traffic periodically to maintain the private status of the land.

Next we can see the Railway Tavern is the only building remaining since this picture was taken near the turn of the century.

The factory, Boorman’s Mill, on the left, has given way to offices.

Fobbing’s The White Lion pub is the only surviving pub in the village, the open fields have given way to some housing, but Fobbing is still very much an Essex village.
