AN MP has welcomed news that work has begun to bring in a new law which would prevent parole for killers who refuse to disclose where their victims bodies are.

Stephen Metcalfe, the Conservative MP for Basildon and East Thurrock, has championed the campaign to bring in Helen’s Law in a bid to support Linda Jones – the mother of murdered teenager Danielle Jones.

Speaking with the Gazette, Mr Metcalfe said: “I’ve been campaigning for this for some time now and met with justice minister Rory Stewart just last month to check on the progress being made.

“I am absolutely delighted that one of his last acts before he moved on was to get things in motion to bring this new law into affect.”

Rory Stewart has since been made Secretary of State for International Development and Justice Secretary David Gauke is pushing the legislation forward.

Linda Jones threw her support behind the campaign in 2016. She then first told the Gazette Campbell did not deserve his freedom while they remain unable to bury Danielle.

She said the family would be made aware when he is eligible for parole and will fight the application – something which Helen’s Law will help with.

Mr Metcalfe said the process is still in its early stages and he is yet to find out a timeframe.

He added: “I’m waiting to hear back about exactly what the next stage is.

“I’ve put calls in to see if we need a new parliamentary law or whether we can bring it in as a new amendment to existing legislation.

“If it’s the latter then hopefully we can bring it in sooner rather than later.

“But the fact that the ball is rolling now is a very welcome step indeed.

“I’m delighted with the news.”
