DOG walkers could be fined up to £1,000 if their pet fouls in Promenade Park.

A new public space protection order (PSPO) has come into effect in both Maldon's Promenade Park and quayside in Burnham.

The order stipulates that walkers should from now on keep their dogs on the lead and they should prevent dog fouling around the lake, sea wall and kiosk are of the park.

It will apply until September and anyone violating the order could face a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80.

If the notice is not paid, it can result in prosecution and a maximum fine could be £1,000.

Sue White, chairman of the community services committee, said: “The new PSPO will encourage responsible dog ownership and make the park more welcoming for everyone during the busy months.

"Its introduction is the result of a public consultation and there is still a good amount of space for dogs to be exercised off the lead.”
