MORE than 650 pupils took part in this year's Colchester Primary Sports League athletics competition at the Garrison.

Pupils from years three to six represented 20 different schools from across the Colchester and Maldon districts.

During the morning, children competed in qualifying heats on the track while others were taking part in two field events - the long jump and ball throw.

The afternoon saw the finals take place, with medals being awarded to the top three athletes and points being won for their schools if pupils finished in the top four.

This year was the highest turnout in the competition's history and the standard reflected that.

Both the teachers and spectators were incredibly impressed with the effort and sportsmanship the competitors showed - something they should be proud of.
