A COMMUNITY is fundraising to create a memorial for a much-loved man who has been dubbed the town’s mascot.

Rayleigh residents have paid tribute to John Daines, lovingly known as Laughing John.

Kevin Hadlow, 51, from Rayleigh, has created an online funding page to collect cash for the memorial.

Mr Hadlow said: “Rayleigh lost one of its true legends, Laughing John.

“He was a massive part of the Rayleigh community and was always engaging with everyone giving us that unforgettable roaring laugh.

“As a resident of Rayleigh for my entire 51 years I felt it right that we needed to raise funds for a lasting memorial to him.

“I set up a Facebook group and engaged a few residents to support me. We have set up a Go Fund Me page, Laughing John Memorial Page Rayleigh

“We have a target figure of £3,000 and have been amazed at the generosity of the community so far.”

Traders and residents also paid tribute to Mr Daines.

Jack Coward, 48, of Eastwood Road, Rayleigh said: “He was so popular in the town and everyone knew him. He used to talk to anyone in the street.

“I think it’s such a great idea that the community is fundraising and I will be donating to this great cause.

“He deserve a tribute and memorial in the High Street and I think everyone will be behind this.
