A “DISGUSTING” woman who bit one police officer and spat on another has been given an electronic tag and a curfew.

Abigail O’Brien was drunk when she launched her attack on the two officers who had come to her Basildon home to help.

Police officers were called to reports of a disturbance at the address, in Long Riding, Basildon, at about 9.15pm on Friday June 14 after a woman had been heard screaming inside.

After arriving at the property, they went inside and found 23-year-old O’Brien intoxicated inside who was screaming and shouting.

When they tried to engage with her, she moved towards them and pushed one of the officers.

This resulted in her being arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.

Concerned that she may harm herself, the officers restrained her and she attempted to kick out at them.

Outside the property, she bit one of the officers and then in the back of a police van spat at on another.

She was charged with three counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker.

At Basildon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday July 2 she admitted all counts and was ordered to wearing an electronic tag and a was made the subject of curfew for six months.

Magistrates also told O’Brien she must pay £85 costs, and an £85 victim surcharge.

The terms of the curfew state she cannot leave her home address in Long Riding between 9pm and 6am.

District commander for Basildon, Ch Insp Chris Bradford, condemned the behaviour.

He said: “No-one turns up to work with the expectation that they’ll be assaulted and police officers are no different in that respect.

“My officers often put themselves in harm’s way and I’m proud of them for doing so but assaulting an officer is completely unacceptable.

“Being bitten and spat at is not only disgusting, but it also risks infection and disease.

“Whenever an officer is assaulted, we make sure they are given the welfare they need to help support them mentally and physically.”
