Rising star Rio can go all the way to the top - Webb

The 18-year-old has had a spectacular season and amassed the club's best results over the year-long season.

He duly received Harwich's President's Cup - their premier award - at the club's annual meeting and presentation night last Tuesday.

It took place at their headquarters in Main Road, Dovercourt.

Gordon's season culminated in six wins from nine, which included making the national England Boxing Elite and Haringey Box Cup semi-finals, as well as making it to the National Amateur Boxing Championship quarter-finals.

The highlight of the season saw him capture the central area of England belt in May, which he hopes to defend next season.

Welterweight Gordon's excellent season also saw him awarded the Tom Parsons Memorial Cup, for best senior boxer, and a share in the Harrison Heating Solutions Cup, for boxers' boxer-of-the-year.

"Rio Gordon is the club's main club torchbearer at the moment," said a proud Webb.

"He very nearly made it to a national elite final at the first attempt in one of the toughest weight categories out there.

"He's one of the finest prospects I've had the privilege to work with in over 30 years of coaching and I'm confident he has the attributes to go all the way."

The USC Shield club champion runner-up spot was shared between Gordon's brother, Paul, and useful welterweight Kilian Hardy.

The latter also added the KMS Cup for most improved boxer and Rotary Club of Harwich and Dovercourt Shield for best elite novice.

In a stellar season, Hardy kept a 100 per cent record, wining all five of his contests, culminating in a Haringey Box Cup gold last month.

He is due to compete in the under-20 bouts development championships in September, when he hopes his rich vein of form will carry him onto national honours.

"Kilian also impressed me over the last 12 months and it's no secret that working closely alongside fellow welterweight Rio has seen both these boxers develop and flourish," added Webb.
