A man has been rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after a large street fight.

Police rushed to the scene in Ambleside Drive and put up a large police cordon and closed the road.

The large cordon has been in place for about 12 hours.

Witnesses reported seeing armed police in the street overnight and detectives searching the area this morning.

Residents have also spotted broken glass covering the street.

Essex Police said: "We are investigating following a serious assault in Southend.

"We were called to reports of a fight involving a number of people in Ambleside Drive at around 11.25pm on Friday 2 August.

"On arrival we found a man in his 20s with serious head injuries and he has been taken to hospital for treatment.

"His condition is not being described as life-threatening.

"The cordon is up so our officers can investigate.
