A heavy police presence rushed to a busy road after reports of concern for a man's welfare.
Witnesses say they spotted a number of armed police units in Whitmore Way, Basildon responding to an incident at about 9.30am this morning.
Pictures from the scene show at least four police cars parked outside a property in the road, near the junction with Ghyllgrove.
A number of worried residents have taken to social media to post about the incident.
A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We were called following reports of concern for the safety of a man in Basildon at 8.35am this morning, Monday 12 August.
"Officers attended Whitmore Way and conducted a thorough search of the area.
"Enquiries are ongoing to locate the alleged victims and the person who placed the call."
