FOUR pals are walking a huge 460 miles to raise money for a cancer charity.

Grace Alsancak, along with three others friends are walking from Brest, France, to Halifax in West Yorkshire, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Ms Alsancak, whose mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018, is taking on the “Quest for Brest” with her fiance Phil, and friends Rachel and Dean.

The foursome, who will set off on September 14, are taking on the task unsupported, carrying their essential gear on their backs and camping along their route.

Ms Alsancak, from Shoebury, said: “I started racking my brain for ideas of a charity event that could raise large amounts of money for this worthy cause.

“It wasn’t until my partner, Phil, said: ‘Isn’t there a place in France called Brest? Maybe you could walk there and raise money?’

“Then the idea took root.

“Unfortunately, cancer seems more prominent than ever these days and while it’s fantastic that survival rates are getting higher, it still doesn’t hide the fact that this horrible illness effects so many people and can bring a whole host of challenges to not only those who have been diagnosed, but to their family and friends.

“That’s why we have chosen to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“It is a charity that this year has been vital in supporting my family through my mum’s own battle and is therefore close to my heart.

“Macmillan is a fantastic charity that with more help and support can help the growing number of people living with cancer, and we want to play a part in helping to do that.”

Steph Westall, Macmillan fundraising manager for Essex, said: “We are almost entirely funded by donations and simply cannot support the growing number of people who need us without the help of people like Grace.

“Cancer is life changing, but with the right support, life with cancer is still life and we help people live it.

“Through better treatment and early diagnosis people are adding years to their lives. “We want to support those affected by cancer to add life to those years.

“The money raised will go towards helping Macmillan support people affected by cancer at the time they need us most. Go to www.questforbrest.com.
