A FIRE station opened its doors so the community could get a behind-the-scenes look at how the service works.

Dozens of families visited Burnham Fire Station on Saturday to see how the team tackles blazes.

Residents also had the chance to speak to the full-time and on-call firefighters about their jobs as well as officers from Essex Police, the coastguard and paramedics.

Station manager Karen Nicoll said: “Despite the slightly unpredictable weather, Saturday’s open day at Burnham Fire Station was a huge success.

“All of the firefighters worked really hard alongside their families to put on a great event for the local community, and were joined by colleagues from Essex Police, the coastguard and paramedic responders.

“Thank you to everyone who came along.

“If you enjoyed the event, I’d really encourage you to consider joining us as an on-call firefighter.

“As long as you live or work within five minutes of an on-call station, are over 18 and are physically fit, it could be an exciting new career opportunity.”
