A FAMILY business has enjoyed a positive start and a warm welcome after opening up a gift shop with a twist.

Bill and Bert’s, which promises unique and quirky products, is open and trading in Sir Isaac's Walk, Colchester.

It has taken up the site left vacant by boutique store Karen Millen, which closed last year.

Owned by Bill Nettelfield and Sarah Charlton, the shop offers everything from handbags and shoes to mini-speakers and scented candles.

The twist? The pair try to use recycled materials where they can.

It starts with the recycled wooden pallets which make up much of the shop - and carries over into some of the products.

They sell flip flops recycled from tyres and fluffy alpaca toys crafted with real alpaca hair.

A picture of schnauzer Bert rests above the till, honouring Bill’s beloved dog which inspired the name of the store.

“We lost Bert three years ago,” he said.

“He’s over the till so he can keep an eye on business.”

Namesake - Bill with Bert

Bill added: “The most common things we have heard when people come in is ‘Wow’ and ‘This is just what Colchester needs.’

“My confidence in the future has come from how people have embraced us.

“The plan was always to find a place locally, we just needed a big enough space.

“We love the town, it is a great place and it is definitely on the up.

“We felt this was the place to go, we thought about other locations but settled on here.”

He added: “It has exceeded our expectations.

“Visitors seem to love what we offer and the feedback we have had already on the Bill and Bert’s Facebook page has been great.”

He added: “The way I would describe the shop is it is a gift emporium.

“We cater to all – even cats and dogs as we have toys for them - we have gifts for everyone in the family.

“The surrounding retailers here - our neighbours - have been wonderful and have embraced us.

“We hope this adds nicely to the independent mix on offer in Eld Lane.”
