TGI Friday's is expected to open in the former Argos building in the centre of Chelmsford at Christmas time.

This was revealed by an Essex Police licensing officer, while warning against allowing food vans to operate late at night in the city.

In the meantime Burger King is also set to open a 24 hour restaurant in the High Street.

However despite a flurry of investment – including plans for a new Pure Gym and Cosy Club restaurant in the area around the Meadows Shopping Centre – Essex Police are keen to warn off late night burger vans they say will increase crime and disorder.

Doner Zamani, operating in Backnang Square outside the Meadows Shopping Centre since December 2018, has had permission to sell a variety of kebabs, rice, chicken and other market foods until 11pm.

But was told it could not open until 4am because of concerns it would add to the risk of increased crime and disorder.

Nigel Dermott, licensing officer for Essex Police, said: “There is development going on in this area with TGI Fridays which I’m expecting around Christmas or just after.

“Burger King are looking at a 24 hours outlet in the High Street and Cosy Club are looking to go in opposite Argos. It is a very bus area.

“To allow the application Essex Police believe would set a precedent for further application for burger vans, hotdog stalls, whatever, positioning themselves in the High Street, Baddow Road.

“On what basis would Essex Police object?”

However there are concerns that the problems stem from cut price drinks.

However it is understood that the matter of drink promotions is one for the local authority to address, not Essex Police.
