A key road in Braintree was underwater last night after a water main burst.

Residents and drivers in Panfield Lane were forced to dodge the large pool of water which covered the entire road.

The water main is understood to have burst sometime around 7pm.

Firefighters were spotted at the scene and a spokesman for the fire service confirmed teams assisted with the clear up operation.

Much of the water has now been drained away but temporary traffic lights have been set up in the affected area.

Anglian Water has confirmed workman are repairing the water main today.

A spokesman said: "Our teams are currently working to repair a burst water main on Panfield Lane in Braintree. A small number of properties in the area may currently be experiencing a loss of supply or pressure, we have already delivered bottled water to those customers.

"Two-way traffic lights are currently in place to allow our teams to make the necessary repairs.

"Due to the proximity of other utilities in the area, we anticipate the repair to the pipe to be completed this evening, with work to continue over the next few days to make the necessary repairs to the road surface.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, and we’d like to thank local residents and road users for their patience while we complete this vital work."
