A man has been jailed for two months after assaulting five police officers.

Catalin-Alexandru Spataru, 23, of Bayham Street, Camden pleaded guilty to five counts of assaulting an emergency worker and one of criminal damage.

On the afternoon of Saturday September 7, Spataru smashed several panes of glass in a door at Subway on the High Street, Grays, and acted aggressively towards staff.

Officers attended to arrest him for the three-figure sum of damage and, once in custody, he became violent.

He bit one officer, attempted to headbutt another, and spat at several others when they attempted to get him into a custody cell.

The investigation was led by Grays Town Centre Team, and speaking on sentencing, Sgt Ben Forbes said: "We won't tolerate officers being assaulted, and I'm glad that all five of our officers have seen justice done with Spataru being jailed and each of the officers will be receiving a three-figure sum of compensation.

"The magistrates involved in reaching this decision agreed that the attacks were 'unprovoked' and that his behaviour was 'disgusting'. I hope that this custodial sentence will give Spataru time to consider his actions."
