The Erskine Bridge has been partially closed in both directions due to an ongoing police incident.

Road users have been urged to avoid the area if possible with heavy traffic on both routes.

Traffic Scotland confirmed the closure at 11:15 this morning on social media.

Initially both lanes on the busy bridge were closed, however the northbound section was reopened at around 12.35pm.

Police say the incident, which involved crews from the coastguard, was in response to "concerns for a person".

Police Scotland Control Rooms tweeted: "Due to an ongoing police incident the southbound side of the #ErskineBridge #A898 is closed at present.

"Please follow @trafficscotland and @ScotTranserv for further updates."

And West Dunbartonshire Police added on Twitter: "We can advise that the Erskine Bridge is currently closed to traffic due to an ongoing police incident.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area at this time and to use an alternative route.

"Further information will be provided in due course."
