DOZENS of Cub Scouts flocked to an activity centre for an annual skills day.

The Cub Scouts from the Crouch Valley District went to Belchamps Activity Centre on September 21 for a day of ten challenges.

The Cub Scouts were given 15 minutes to complete the various tasks to be awarded points. These would then be added together, at the end of the day, to find the winning Cub pack.

To mark Essex Scouts 100-year anniversary, each base was designed meet some of their “100 Challenges”.

The Cub Scouts would have to work together, in order to complete each base.

These challenges ranged from making and testing self-propelled vehicles, identifying bugs and eating a selection of freshly prepared insects to making sandcastles or sculptures.

One base saw the Cub Scouts erecting a tent among a team of mixed ability children.

Tony Humphries, assistant county training manager for Essex, said: “The day’s events ended with a presentation to the three top scoring Cub packs, in third place was 4th Rochford, second place was awarded to 6th Rayleigh with the overall winners in first place being 2nd Rayleigh.

"The best quote of the day was by a parent upon being told and shown her Cub scout eating an insect said ‘but he still won’t eat his vegetables’.”
