TWIN sisters have been declared modern day eco-warriors after setting up their own litter picking team.
Nine-year-old sisters Jessica and Gracie even spent their birthday money on litter grabbers and team shirts branding themselves Leigh Litter Pickers.
Jessica has also become an eco-warrior at West Leigh Junior School, which they both attend.
The pair are becoming a familiar sight on the streets cleaning up after school and proving everyone can make a difference if they really care.
Jessica said: “When I became an eco warrior at school, I wanted to help clean up the environment.
“First of all I gave up eating palm oil, and then I noticed that there was a lot of litter around our school, so I asked my mum if I could buy a litter picker with my birthday money.
“Then I asked her if we could print some T-shirts, and that’s when I came up with the name for our club, Leigh Litter Pickers.
“It would be amazing if more people joined us.
“To anyone dropping litter I would say to think about what you are doing.
“Get into a habit of putting it in the bin.
“This is your earth and you are hurting it.”
Gracie added: “When I see litter on the floor it makes me a bit angry how people are so careless.
“If everyone was a bit more thoughtful, the world would be a cleaner place.
“We don’t mind going out after school to pick up litter because we are helping to save the wildlife.”
Proud mum Deborah said: “Jessica is taking the eco-warrior role very seriously.
“Jessica’s twin, Gracie, was really keen to get involved so they came up with a movement together, called Leigh Litter Pickers and hope to encourage others to join them.
“The team T-shirts also recently arrived.
“Their aim is to encourage others to join them and get people involved in keeping the streets litter-free.
“I’m so proud of my girls. Rather than jumping straight on their tablets when they get home from school, they’re hassling me to go out litter-picking.
“I’m pretty certain that I wasn’t quite as conscientious when I was their age, or even now to be honest, but I totally support their efforts.”
