PLANS have been announced for a major eight month revamp of Canvey Island’s gas pipe system.

Work is due to get underway next month.

Gas supply at properties where the firm is replacing old gas service pipes will need to be disconnected for up to 48 hours to enable the work to be carried out.

Resident Maria Tuffin, of Rosberg Road, said: “I am so worried about the chaos this will cause.

“I know this work has to be done but am so concerned that families will be without gas for too long.

“It’s going to be a nightmare with road closures and total disruption.

“I hope my gas isn’t turned off and we are not inconvenienced too much.

“I think it’s good Cadent is investing in Canvey to improve the system.”

Stephen Batemen, 33, of Ormo Road, said: “Traffic is bad enough on the island now and it doesn’t bear thinking about what it’ll be like with this.

“I am unsure why it’ll take eight months, that seems like such a long time for these works.

“It does sound like this will help improve and look after our gas system, which is good.”

Cadent authorising engineer Jason Allday said: “We’re working closely with the council to ensure we minimise disruption to the area.

“The project will help ensure the community keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies until the 22nd century and also cut disruption caused by leaks from ageing gas mains.

“I’d encourage anyone with questions about the work to either come along to the open evening or contact us.”

Cadent will be installing new gas mains from Smallgains Avenue to Point Road via Westman Road and Buren Avenue.

A new gas regulator will also be installed on the verge at the junction of Westman Road.

The project also includes new gas mains and service pipes in Ormo Road, Rattwick Drive and Linroping Avenue.

New gas mains and service pipes will be installed in Hornsland Road, Henson Avenue, Hannet Road and Bardenville Road.

Other roads where the new gas mains and service pipes will be installed include: Hallet Road, Norton Avenue, Temptin Avenue, Gifhorn Road, Geylen Road, Limetree Road, Wamburg Road, Rosberg Road, Zealand Drive and Rattwick Drive.

The work will be done in stages but there will be significant closures.
