A bid to stop fireworks from causing harm to animals and vulnerable people has been backed by Southend Council.

During a cabinet meeting this afternoon, council leaders said they were in full support of a motion which called for the authority to lobby the government for new legislation and encourage local sellers to stock quieter fireworks.

Councillor Carole Mulroney said: "People use more than the odd sparkler and rocket now, they are far more powerful and that carries danger with it for our older population and animals, so I am very happy to support this."

The changes will seek to limit fireworks sold for private display to 90 decibels, rather than allowing the sale of some that can reach as high as 120.

Under the plans all public firework displays within Southend would have to be advertised in advance. The council will also launch a public awareness campaign on the impact fireworks can have on animal welfare.
