TO most of the population, he is just that funny Welsh guy from Gavin and Stacey, who has a penchant for telling long-winded stories with awkward endings.

But television star and comedian, Rob Brydon, is much more than a quirky, fictional character who once had an unspoken incident while on a fishing trip.

In fact, in addition to his role in the award-winning sitcom, and becoming synonymous with comedy panel show Would I Lie To You?, Brydon is also a talented crooner.

And his ability to navigate around a melody is predominantly what his performance will be centred on when he takes to the stage at Charter Hall next week.

Entitled Songs and Stories, Brydon’s latest touring show sees the celebrated performer showcase his vocal range against a backdrop of live music, courtesy of his tight band.

In between tackling tracks from the likes of his national counterpart Tom Jones and Tom Waits, he will show-off some of his trademark impressions of Mick Jagger, Michael Caine and Steve Coogan.

The somewhat intimate gig, which is visiting venues across the country, will also feature interesting tales from Brydon’s lengthy and respected career.

Speaking last year about the show, Brydon said he hoped it would enlighten audiences and fans of his previous work to his many other talents.

“It will take some people by surprise,” he said.

“There are so many media outlets nowadays that some people might only know me from Gavin and Stacey or Would I Lie To You?.

“Those people often say to me, ‘I didn’t know you could sing’, and yet I have sung a lot.

“I hope this show is a very pleasant surprise for audiences.”

Rob Brydon was given an MBE back in 2013 for his services to comedy and broadcasting, but he was also recognised for his work with charities.

Children in Need, Comic Relief and Great Ormond Street Hospital are just some of the many organisations who have benefitted from his comedy’s ability to drive fundraisers.

He will perform at Charter Hall on Wednesday from 7.30pm with doors opening at 6.30pm.

Tickets for the show, which will conclude at 10pm, cost £39.50 and can be purchased by visiting colchester-events.co.uk.

They can also be ordered by calling the venue on 01206 573948.
