RESIDENTS are being urged to be on guard following a spate of burglaries and car thefts across the north of the county.

A total of 40 properties in Colchester, Braintree, Chelmsford and Maldon have been targeted since February 3.

Over this time 29 cars have also been stolen, usually between the hours of 3am and 5am.

Detectives are urging residents in the north of the county to double lock their doors and ensure their vehicles are secure.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "Whilst our officers are working hard to investigate these offences, we are urging people to take precautions including double-locking their front doors, using steering wheel locks where possible, and ensuring that car keys are out of sight of windows and letterboxes.

"We are treating these offences as linked and anyone with information that can assist our enquiries is asked to call their local CID on 101."
