A WESTCLIFF care home has confirmed it has had a number of deaths recently, with one being coronavirus-related.

The team at the care home in Westcliff Lodge, in Crowstone Road, have expressed their condolences.

This comes after The Echo revealed how two residents from The Grange, in Wickford, were taken to hospital in mid-March and tested positive for the virus.

One passed away due to underlying health conditions, while the other is recovering.

Six carers from The Grange also tested positive and are self-isolating.

A spokesperson from Westcliff Lodge said: “Sadly we have experienced some recent deaths in the care home, and our thoughts are very much with those affected at this challenging time.

“Only one of those deaths was considered to be COVID-19 related.

“We are liaising with Public Health England, the CQC and our local authority on this matter as per the national guidelines in place.

“We also continue to have the relevant infection control measures and personal protective equipment in place to ensure our residents and staff are protected at this challenging time.”

Southend Councillor Trevor Harp, cabinet member for health and adult social care, said: “We are currently aware of one death in the care home where COVID-19 was considered a contributory factor.

“Whatever the cause of death, our sympathies are with their friends and family. We are liaising with the care home in question and Public Health England to ensure all necessary precautions are in place to protect those still living and working in the care home.”

Southend Council deputy leader, Ron Woodley, said: “It’s very sad when anyone passes away, especially in these hard times.

"I feel very sorry for both the family and the resident themself for having to experience this and send my sadness and condolences to all those who have been affected.”

A CQC spokesperson, said: “We are aware people have died recently at Westcliff Lodge, and one death may have been related to coronavirus.

“We offer our condolences to all their families and friends.”
