A MANHUNT is underway after a woman was raped in broad daylight at a Southend train station.

British Transport Police (BTP) descended to Southend East Train Station on Riviera Drive following a call at 4.33pm.

Dozens of officers attended the scene, and a huge search was carried out in the surrounding areas.

Reports from residents near the area online said the police were searching through bushes with torches throughout the evening.

However, the suspect could not be found.

A spokesman for BTP said: "The British Transport Police was called at 4.33pm on April 26 to Southend East station following a report of a rape.

"Officers attended and carried out a wide-ranging search, however the suspect, who is known to the victim, had fled the area.

"Officers have spoken to a number of witnesses and reviewed CCTV at the station and in the surrounding area.

"The investigation continues with officers pursuing strong lines of enquiry."

British Transport Police are still searching for the perpetrator and welcome any information that can help.
