South Essex has joined in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe.

Today at 11am, Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), a two-minute silence was held, with the Queen set to address the nation later this evening.

Street parties and celebrations would've been planned across the area to mark the monumental occasion, but with the country on lockdown due to the covid-19 pandemic, households, families and key figures have taken a socially distant approach in honouring the servicemen and women of World War Two.

Victory in Europe Day marks the day in 1945 when Britain and its allies accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, bringing the war in Europe to an end.

Southend Mayor Councillor John Lamb and Mayoress Pat Lamb took to Southend Cenotaph for the big anniversary, with the message 'Lest we forget' still reigning true 75 years on.

A magnificent Saga ship, The Spirit of Discovery, is also commemorating VE Day, shining the message bright with 75 lights.

The vessel is currently berthed in the Port of Tilbury.
