A BLAZE which gutted a flat on Southend seafront was started by accident, an investigation has revealed.

Essex firefighters launched an investigation into the cause of the fire in Eastern Esplanade, Southend, which led to a man being rescued.

Firefighters did not release details of what specifically caused the fire.

The shocked man was helped out of the property through the neighbouring flat.

Five fire crews from across south Essex tackled the fire. Video here.

Following an investigation the cause of the fire has been recorded as accidental.

Adam Paterson, Crew Manager at Southend Fire Station, said: "Once the fire was out and we began our investigation we realised there were no working smoke alarms in the flat.

"If the man hadn't noticed the fire when he did this could have resulted in a tragic ending.

"It's so important to make sure you have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home. It will alert you to the first sign of fire, so you can get out, stay out and call 999."
